This is a reproduction of the very hard to find 1916 M101-4 Sporting News Supplement #87 card featuring Joe.

The 200 cards in each of the M101-4 and M101-5 sets showcase identical front designs. Measuring 1-5/8" by 3", these pasteboards present a black-and-white photograph, along with the player's name, position, team and card number. The M101-4 series was issued in April of 1916, the beginning of a season which would see Joe collect 202 hits, leading the league in both triples (21) and total bases (293). He also had 40 doubles and 24 stolen bases, while striking out only 25 times in 155 games.

Numbered in alphabetical sequence by the players' last names, the cards in this series are often referred to as Sporting News singles because a large number of the backs flaunt an ad from the renowned publication. In reality, however, the Sporting News was just one of 18 businesses – including other publications, clothing stores, department stores, bakeries, breweries and even a theatre – that had their names printed on the back of these pasteboards. Some backs were even left blank.

Copies of this card routinely sell for $10,000+, with some examples fetching more than $25,000.
